This event will be of interest to those involved in workforce and human resource planning.

The Canadian Institute of Marine Engineering (CIMarE) and the Canadian Network for Innovative Shipbuilding, Marine Research and Training (CISMarT) will host a one-day educational workshop at this year’s Mari-Tech Conference and Exhibition at the Halifax Convention Centre, 1650 Argyle Street, on Thursday, April 30, 2020.

Canadian-flag operators are suffering a critical shortage of senior engineering officers, entry-level marine engineers, electrical officers, and shore-based support service engineers and technologists. And yet Canada is well equipped with world-class universities, technical schools, and marine officer training facilities. However, recruitment at these institutions has flatlined and in some cases is declining. The purpose of this workshop is to ask why. And to discuss a strategic plan to attract the attention of our young people to the career opportunities that await them in Canada’s marine sector.

Marine educators, shipowners, and marine industry human resources leaders are invited to participate in the workshop specifically for education and industry leaders concerned about the recruitment, education, training and career development of marine engineers and technicians in Canada. We seek to animate a crucial discussion about the vocational formation and career paths of marine engineers and marine technicians interested in seagoing and support careers.

The goal of the workshop is to identify common areas of concern and create an ongoing conversation, a shared understanding and an action plan to recruit, educate and retain talented people from across Canada in marine engineering and marine technical careers. The workshop follows on recent education and training initiatives, including CISMaRT’s past educational conferences and the creation of the Canadian Marine Industry Foundation to promote seagoing careers.

There is no attendance fee but participation in the workshop is limited; early registration is therefore suggested. Registration includes: breakfast, morning refreshment break, lunch, access to the Mari-Tech 2020 Exhibition Hall and the Young Professionals closing reception, compliments of the CIMarE.

Breakfast will be available from 0700 to 0830 followed at 0830 with welcoming remarks and introductions. A plenary discussion will follow, featuring representatives from: the Canadian Marine Industry Foundation; The Canadian Association of Marine Training Institutions; CISMarT and provincial Departments of Education. A Q&A session will follow. In the afternoon, there will be breakout sessions involving all attendees.
